Beginning a new position can be hard at first, but what if one of your duties is something you don’t have a lot of experience with? As the new Public Services Librarian at Pitt Community College, I was put in charge of the PCC Archives. In this session, I will discuss how I began curating the Archives and how the work of assembling archives also brings in elements of equity, inclusion, and diversity. By collecting and identifying artifacts that are relevant to a library, campus, or community, we are both using a form of literacy and studying how literacy was used in the past. Archives are a clear illustration of what lifelong learning is; a visual timeline of past to present to future.
By sharing the steps I took to begin this project, others may learn tips and tricks to begin their project. Whether wanting to learn more about beginning an archival project, or taking the first steps of any project, this presentation and interactive discussion is for you.
