Supporting the “Whole Student”: Leisure Programs at Academic Libraries

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

College students don’t always associate leisure reading, watching films, and readers’ advisory with academic libraries, where research support is typically the primary focus. With the recent backdrop of the pandemic and increased awareness of student mental health crises, many academic libraries have increased support for the “whole student,” in addition to support for academic needs. During this session, staff from the R.B. House Undergraduate Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will share the revitalization of their leisure media and reading programs to meet students’ identified needs for wellness and stress-relief. Programs include a recently launched book recommendation service; staff-curated film and book lists; and a landing page highlighting language learning, streaming media, and more. Staff will discuss how diversity, inclusion, and well-being serve as the guiding principles for these revamped programs and will share ideas for implementing similar programs at your library.
