Academic librarians teach one-shot instruction sessions. If we’re lucky enough to be “embedded into a course,” we might have more than one opportunity to teach students the skills they need to be savvy consumers of information and ethical researchers. At UNC Charlotte, teaching librarians have been encouraged by administration to look for opportunities by which we can teach literacy in venues other than the “library classroom”. Two subject librarians have found opportunities to incorporate literacy instruction into courses they’ve developed for the University Honors Program around banned books and place-based learning. The purpose of this presentation is to detail how, in developing our own course curriculums, we have embedded literacy instruction into first year and higher level Honors Courses that in no way resemble library research sessions.
